Night-time Skincare Routine to Strengthen the Skin's Barrier

Are you fed up with your skin being dry and dull when you get up every morning? I've been there, and I understand your frustration. After years of trial and error, I've gathered the simple steps to achieving hydrated, plump, radiant skin overnight in this guide.

Our skin undergoes stress and damage during the day, from environmental factors to daily routines. Therefore, having a consistent nighttime skincare routine is essential for its health and rejuvenation.

By following these steps, you will wake up to a more glowing complexion and give your skin the nourishment it requires to be healthy. So, let's look at my routine to help you revive your skin to look more plump and dewy while strengthening the skin's barrier and drenching it in hydration.

1. Prepare Your Skin

Looking after your skin is crucial in maintaining a healthy and youthful appearance. To achieve this, it is essential to have a consistent skincare routine. A good skincare routine helps remove impurities from the skin and provides nourishment and protection. Investing a few minutes daily to prep your skin allows you to enjoy a more radiant and healthy complexion that glows from the inside out. Here is how to begin:

  • Cleanse

Cleansing your face is crucial to starting your nighttime skincare routine. This helps to remove all the dirt, oil, and makeup accumulated over the day, preventing clogged pores and dullness. A gentle and hydrating gel-based cleanser works wonders and is especially great for sensitive skin, as it removes impurities without stripping natural oils. Since the goal is to hydrate your skin, avoid all facial washes that foam and contain the ingredient sodium laureth sulfate (SLS).

  • Exfoliate

Now, when it comes to exfoliation, opinions often differ. However, a gentle exfoliator incorporated into your routine once or twice a week can help you shed dead skin cells and reveal brighter, more radiant skin beneath. The key is not to scrub your skin raw but to assist in the natural shedding. I recommend avoiding apricot-based scrubs, as I’ve experienced that they can create micro-tears on the skin's surface. Instead, use a sugar face polish such as the one by Fresh or a liquid exfoliant containing AHAs and BHAs.

  • Tone

After exfoliation, using a hydrating floral essence toner is crucial as it sets the stage for optimal hydration. A good toner rebalances your skin’s pH after cleansing and helps the rest of your products penetrate more effectively. Initially sceptical about toners, I found that integrating a hydrating toner has genuinely prepped my skin to absorb the beneficial effects of the following formulas.

2. Nourish Your Skin

After properly preparing your skin, nourishing it deeply before bed is essential. This step is crucial because our skin undergoes its most profound repairing and rejuvenating process while we sleep. Here's how I elevate my nighttime skincare routine to ensure I wake up with that sought-after hydrated, plump, and radiant look.

  • Serum

To begin with, I apply a hydrating serum packed with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or vitamin C. Hyaluronic acid is a hydration hero that draws moisture into the skin, helping it look plump and alive. Vitamin C, on the other hand, increases the making of collagen, which is essential for preserving the skin's suppleness and firmness. This combination ensures that my skin is not only hydrated but also glowing. When applying hyaluronic acid (HA), a brilliant hack is to dampen the skin first, which further helps rehydration.

  • Moisturise

Next, I use Fresh Rose Face Cream to moisturise my skin. This best-selling hyaluronic acid moisturiser delivers 72-hour deep hydration with strengthening damask rose extract, ensuring my skin remains dewy and plumped with moisture. The luxury skincare brand Fresh uses natural ingredients, ancient rituals, and modern science when creating formulas for the skin and body. This product comes in a pink pot for £42 and has a lovely, sweet, yet delicate scent. Its lightweight formula sinks effortlessly into my skin, providing instant hydration and continuing to hydrate over time, making my skin feel smooth and soft.

The moisturisers rose extract strengthens the skin's barrier and boosts its natural hyaluronic acid levels, while rosewater soothes and calms. The dual-weight hyaluronic acids tackle surface hydration and deeper moisturisation, ensuring a thorough and lasting effect. The innovative time-release technology maintains hydration levels, keeping my skin plumped and dewy long into the next day.

  • Eye Cream

Lastly, I never overlook my eyes. A nourishing eye cream targets the delicate under-eye area, helping to reduce puffiness and minimise dark circles, ensuring that I look rested and refreshed. When you apply face cream, you should gently tap the formula into the skin; this is especially important when applying cream around the delicate eye area, which is much thinner than other facial skin areas. Never rub the skin. This includes when drying the skin, too, so always pat dry.

3. Aid Skin Repair

After completing the essential steps of your skincare routine, you should focus on further aiding your skin's overnight repair process with treatments that can be done every few days or every night.

  • Mask

One step that can work wonders is applying a hydrating overnight mask or sleeping pack. It assists in retaining all the benefits of the serums and moisturisers applied beforehand, providing a boost of intense hydration and aiding skin repair as you sleep. Waking up to soft, supple skin after rinsing it off in the morning is gratifying.

  • Massage

In addition, a gentle facial massage before bed can help you relax, stimulate blood circulation, reduce puffiness, and enhance the absorption of the products. Using a few drops of facial oil or even a jade roller or gua sha tool for this purpose can lift the experience and make it a ritual you look forward to every night.

I previously had visible puffiness on the skin where the cheek and undereye meet. However, once I began introducing facial exercises to encourage lymphatic drainage, thankfully, I no longer have it, as it made me feel self-conscious. These exercises also helped accentuate my face's contours, a bonus.

  • Light Therapy

Another revolutionary addition to the nighttime routine is the LED light therapy mask. To benefit, dedicate 10 minutes to this gadget a few times a week; seeing its impact is noticeable after a few uses but especially after three months of use, like all new skincare routines.

The LED lights target various skin concerns, including promoting collagen production and reducing inflammation, which is crucial for that plump and radiant morning glow. It's not just about the immediate effects; your skin's texture and overall radiance will significantly improve.

4. Get Beauty Sleep

Ah, the elusive beauty sleep - often talked about but not easily achieved in our always-on world. However, after waking up with hydrated, plump, and radiant skin, prioritising a good night's sleep is as crucial as any skincare product or routine you follow.

  • Sleep

In my pursuit of that morning glow, I've found that creating a calm environment in the bedroom significantly impacts the quality of rest I get. Lowering the lights and playing soothing music has become a pre-sleep ritual that signals my body that it's time to wind down. Deep breathing exercises also work wonders in shedding the day's stress, making slipping into a refreshing slumber easier.

Ensuring you get 7-8 hours of sleep every night is fundamental. During these crucial hours, your skin goes into overdrive, repairing itself, making every minute count. Skimping on sleep negatively affects your health and robs your skin of this vital repair time. My skin's appearance has significantly changed since I commit to this part of my routine - it's like giving my skin a mini-holiday every night.

My nightly ritual starts by turning on a Himalayan salt lamp, spraying my face with a lavender facial spray, swapping the blue lights of my phone for a physical book, eventually turning on soothing rain sounds, and putting on a silk eye mask.

  • Pillowcase

A silk or satin pillowcase can offer several benefits for your skin compared to a polyester one. Silk and satin are smoother and softer fabrics, which can help reduce friction and irritation. On the other hand, polyester can be rough and abrasive to your skin, causing damage and facial lines over time.

Additionally, silk and satin are hypoallergenic and less prone to aggravate sensitive skin or trigger allergic reactions. Besides these advantages for your skin, silk and satin pillowcases are also known for their luxurious feel and can help keep your hair shiny and healthy.

5. Morning Aftercare

Waking up with a refreshed face is excellent, but maintaining that radiant glow requires a morning skincare routine. Through my skincare explorations over the years, I have learned that how you treat your skin's morning regimen is equally important as your evening one.

Your AM skincare ritual should be similar to your night-time routine but a little more streamlined, such as cleansing, toning, moisturising, and protecting. This will ensure that your day and night skincare routines complement each other and actively encourage maintaining the plump and radiant look we all desire.

  • SPF

I’ve learnt from the experiences of my nan and mom, who had melanoma skin cancer, that sunscreen is crucial for protecting the skin; without it, your nighttime efforts will be less noticeable, and obviously, it is capable of much more damage than just dull skin.

No matter the weather, I never skip applying broad-spectrum sunscreen. It's the ultimate shield against premature ageing and helps protect my skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. Despite being beautiful, sadly, sunshine can absorb moisture from our skin, leave it dehydrated, and damage skin cells.

So, regardless of how perfect your AM and PM skincare routine is, achieving that coveted, dewy skin will be much more challenging if you don’t protect it from the sun. Remember to not only apply it to your face; my closest relatives got skin cancer on the nose, scalp, chest, and hand. So be sure to use it on areas of skin that aren’t covered up when you're out during the day.

6. Lifestyle Tips for Improving  Skin Hydration

An effective skincare routine isn’t the only thing you can do for your skin; it needs to be nourished from the inside out to set free its full potential. Our everyday choices significantly influence our skin's hydration levels.

Beyond the bottles and jars of our skincare regime, how we live is fundamental to maintaining that desirable, hydrated, plump, and radiant skin. I've found that minor adjustments to my lifestyle have made a notable difference.

  • Water

Firstly, hydration starts from within. It might sound like a broken record, but drinking plenty of water throughout the day is non-negotiable for me. I've noticed my skin looks supple and bouncier when I'm well-hydrated. It's a simple yet effective step that supports the efficacy of all the topical hydration I apply.

  • Diet

The diet also plays a crucial role. Following a plant-based nutrition plan, I aim to eat foods with omega-3 fatty acids, like flax seeds, chai seeds, and avocados, which are fantastic for locking in moisture. Fruits and vegetables, packed with antioxidants, help combat free radicals, contributing to skin that stays hydrated and looks vibrant and healthy.

Another lifestyle change that's positively impacted my skin hydration is monitoring my caffeine and alcohol intake. It was a bit of a challenge initially, given my love for morning coffee and the occasional glass of wine, but these can be dehydrating. Moderation has been vital, ensuring I offset each cup or glass with extra water.

Lastly, getting into the habit of using a humidifier in my bedroom has been a game-changer, especially during the drier months. It helps maintain a moisture-rich environment, preventing my skin from drying overnight.

These lifestyle tweaks and a diligent skincare routine have significantly improved my skin's hydration levels. It's about creating a balance that works for you and your skin, recognising that the steps you take internally are just as vital as the products you apply externally.

To conclude

The key to waking up with healthy, radiant, and hydrated skin lies in a nightly routine that prioritises nourishment from the inside out. This routine should begin with a thorough cleanse, followed by gentle exfoliation, rebalancing with a toner, and intense hydration with serums and moisturisers.

An overnight mask will also help seal the goodness, while an eye cream can brighten the eye area. Completing the routine with foods and drinks rich in water, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and plenty of sleep is equally important.

From personal experience, I have learned that consistency is essential in achieving dewy skin. It may be tempting to skip steps or switch products when tired, but sticking to a routine pays off. While having a go-to regimen is essential, listening to your skin's daily feedback is equally important. On some days, your skin may need extra moisture, while a lighter touch will suffice on other days.

Healthy, hydrated skin requires dedication, patience, and a personalised skincare routine. Keep at it, and your skin will feel better and gain a natural glow. Most importantly, never skip the SPF.
